Akra: Handmade Gemstone and Enamel Jewelry from Tbilisi
In 2017 I made my first piece of jewelry, an enamel piece, for a friend. I still remember the disbelief on that face, and the question that kept coming back: did you really make this yourself? What was a hobby then is my profession today.
From Enamel to Stone
My mother taught me cloisonné enamel. She has been making jewelry for more than twenty years, and the first tools I ever used were hers. Cloisonné is a Georgian tradition that goes back centuries, and every piece has to be drawn and fired by hand.
But I wanted to make something that would be rare in my own country. That is how I started studying natural stones: how they cut, how they behave in the light, which ones hold up to being worn every day. Today I do both, Georgian cloisonné enamel and gemstone jewelry.
From Raw Stone to Finished Piece
Every piece is made from start to finish by my own hands. I choose the rough stone, I cut it, and I set it in 925 sterling silver. I think of myself as a designer, not only as a stone cutter.
Every stone is picked by hand. I have known my suppliers for years and I know where each stone comes from.
Unlike factory production, no two pieces here are the same. The pattern in the stone, the color and the finish are different every time, and that is what gives each piece its own character.
The Workshop Is in the Next Room
Akra has been open on Abano Street in Old Tbilisi since 2018. The workshop is here too, in the room next door, so if you come by you can see where and how the jewelry is made. The door is open every day, from 10:00 to 21:00.
You will be met by experienced staff who will help you choose and answer your questions.
If You Want a Piece of Your Own
I take custom orders. If you have a particular stone, a size or an idea in mind, write to me and we will work out together what is possible.
Custom work is not an exception here. Since no two pieces are alike, most of what I make is already one of a kind.
