Lapis lazuli is not a single mineral, it is a rock. The deep blue comes from lazurite, the pale veining is calcite, and those small gold flecks scattered through it are pyrite. Every stone here was cut and set by hand in my workshop in Tbilisi, in sterling silver (925).

Lapis is soft, 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, and it is one of the most commonly treated stones there is. The International Gem Society lists dyeing as common, along with wax and oil impregnation. Clean it with a soft brush and mild soap only. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners and every chemical solvent, perfume and hairspray included. More on the stone in my article on lapis lazuli.
