This raw lapis lazuli necklace hangs one violet blue teardrop in a rim of dark silver beads.

Lapis lazuli is not a mineral
Lapis lazuli is a rock rather than a mineral: it is made of several minerals that grew together, and the blue among them comes from lazurite. That is why no two pieces of lapis are the same. The mix is different in every fragment.

A surface we left alone
The face of this stone is not polished. A crust of small crystals sits across it, so instead of returning the light in one mirrored patch it catches it in hundreds of separate points. Lower down the crust breaks off and a smoother, darker area shows.

A rim of beads, and claws
Small silver beads run the whole way round the stone. Claws rise from that rim, each finished with a beaded tip, and fold over the edge to hold it. The silver is oxidized dark, so the blue reads deeper against it. We shape the stone and build the silver around it in our Tbilisi studio.

An open back and a fanned bail
Behind the stone the silver is not closed. It is cut into a branching pattern, and the stone shows through the openings. Above it the bail spreads like a fan, grooved down its length, with a row of beads along its lower edge.
