Blue Lapis Lazuli Earrings - Raw Ovals, Toothed Rims

These blue lapis lazuli earrings hang two raw ovals in crowns of silver teeth.

Lapis is a soft stone
As gem materials go, lapis is soft. That is why it is worked as cabochons, beads and inlay rather than faceted, and why it rewards being worn where it is not knocked. An ear is exactly that place: the drop hangs clear and touches almost nothing.

Ovals, with the face left raw
Both stones are cut as ovals, but their faces are not polished. A crust of small crystals sits across each one, so instead of returning the light in one mirrored patch it catches it in many separate points.

A crown of teeth
Fine silver teeth run the whole way round each stone, set close together, and some of them fold over onto the face to hold it. We shape both stones and build the silver around them in our Tbilisi studio.

The back is left open
Behind each stone the silver is not closed. It is cut into a branching pattern, and the blue shows through the openings. The same hand that worked the front worked the side nobody sees.

Leverback, not a hook
Above each stone stands a flat, textured bar, which is the front of the fitting. The hinged lever closes behind the ear, so the drop cannot slide off during the day.

Every stone is chosen and set one at a time. The pair that reaches you will be close to the photograph and never a copy of it.
