Most people who come into my shop looking for a gift are buying for a wife or a mother. Others want something for a friend with a birthday coming up. Almost all of them ask the same thing first: what if the ring is the wrong size?
With my rings, it can't be. Every natural stone ring I make is adjustable, so the size is never a guess. That one answer usually settles the nerves, and the real choosing can start.
I have run my shop on Abano Street in Tbilisi since 2019, and I make every piece in it by hand. This guide shows how to choose jewelry for a gift the way I help people at the counter. It covers what to look at, what you can find out without asking, and what to do when you truly don't know their taste.
How to Choose Jewelry for Someone Else: Start With What They Wear
The best clue is already on them. Before I show anyone a single piece, I ask three things.
The three questions I ask in the shop
First, how old is she? Second, what does she reach for most: rings, earrings or necklaces? Third, do you have a photo of what she wears every day?
The photo helps most. Family pictures on a phone often show the same earrings or the same chain again and again. That is her everyday taste, shown rather than described.
How my shop window is arranged
My window is arranged by who usually picks what. On one side are the pieces younger women tend to choose. On the other are pieces chosen by women whose style is long settled.
The difference shows in size and in the darkening. On the younger side, pieces are small and fine. Think of this jade ring with a small round stone and a sprig of silver leaves. On the other side, the silver is fuller and darker, like this jade ring set in wide silver coral.
I make most pieces already knowing which side they will sit on. Age is only a starting point, though. If the photo says otherwise, I follow the photo.
Ring, Earrings or Necklace: What Each One Asks of You
Most people already know which one they want to give. My job is to explain what to check for each.
A ring that cannot be the wrong size
A ring worries people most, because a ring that doesn't fit stays in the box. With my natural stone rings, that worry is gone: each one adjusts to her finger, so you never need to know her size.
Earrings she will actually notice
Earrings are what people see first, and the earrings I make are meant to be seen. Before you buy, check that her ears are pierced, and read in the description how the pair closes.
Sensitive ears are the other worry. The American Academy of Dermatology lists earrings among the most common sources of nickel trouble. The silver I use has no nickel in it; the rest of the alloy is copper. I explain this in detail in how sterling silver behaves on sensitive skin.
Why my necklaces hang on a cord
Every necklace I make hangs on a 45 cm (18 in) cord rather than a chain. I chose a cord so that nothing competes with the stone.
It is also a safe length to give. Blue Nile puts it simply. "The most common, everyday length is 18 inches, sitting just below the collarbone." If you know she likes it shorter or longer, I can make the cord to order.
Choosing a Stone for Someone Else
Many people come in knowing one thing: the month of her birthday. "Which stone is hers?" is one of the questions I hear most, and it has a clear answer.
The modern birthstone list goes back to 1912, when American jewelers agreed on a shared list (Wikipedia). It has been updated since, and GIA shows the current version. Five of its months are stones I cut myself:
- February: amethyst jewelry
- March: aquamarine jewelry
- June: moonstone jewelry
- September: lapis lazuli jewelry
- October: tourmaline jewelry
September is the one people rarely expect. The International Colored Gemstone Association puts it plainly: "September birthstone: Sapphire or Lapis Lazuli." Lapis also has history on its side. On the 1912 list, it was the stone for December, until it was replaced in 1952.
If the month doesn't help, go by color. Think of the color she wears most, then look at every stone side by side.
Handmade Means No Two Are the Same
Every stone I set is cut by hand, and no two stones in nature are alike. Even if I wanted to make two identical pieces, the stones would not allow it.
The silver could be repeated. I choose not to. When I make a frame, I change it a little each time, so it suits the stone in front of me.
For a gift, this means something simple: what she opens has no twin. Nobody at the next table will be wearing the same piece. You can see what I mean across the full collection, where every stone looks a little different from its neighbor.
Gifts That Travel Well
Most of my customers are travelers, so I think a lot about how a piece gets home.
Every piece leaves my shop the same way. It goes into a soft pouch, the pouch goes into a firm Akra box, and the box goes into a small paper bag. The box is there so the piece arrives the way it left.
The Akra box every piece travels in. The pouch goes inside it, and a paper bag goes around it.
If you are flying, keep jewelry in your carry-on. The TSA asks travelers to "keep those items with you at all times (do not put them in checked baggage)."
Ordering online works the same way, with two extras. I can wrap the order as a gift and add a note from you. If you know her address, I can also send it straight to her. There is free shipping to every country, with tracking.
Holiday Jewelry Gift Guide: Christmas, Valentine's Day and Birthdays
The way you choose stays the same. What changes is the calendar.
Jewelry Christmas gifts
Every piece is made and packed in Tbilisi, so timing matters in December. Preparing an order takes 1 to 3 business days. After that, delivery takes 7 to 14 business days to the United States and 5 to 10 to Europe.
So order at least four weeks before Christmas for the US, and three weeks for Europe. Expedited shipping cuts the trip to 4 to 6 business days. If you are already late, the gift card arrives by email within minutes, on the day you choose.
Valentine's Day jewelry gifts for her
The same timing applies in February, so order by mid-January. For a partner, you likely know her style better than anyone. Go back to the photos on your phone. If you are thinking of a ring, my natural stone rings take the size risk away.
Birthdays
Start with her birthstone from the list above. If her month is not on it, go by color instead.
When You Genuinely Don't Know: the Gift Card
Some people tell me, "I just want something she will love." I am honest with them. No jeweler can promise that, because taste is personal. Mine is not hers, and neither is yours.
That is what the Akra gift card is for. She gets to look through everything and choose the piece that feels like hers.
It comes in amounts from $100 to $300 and never expires. She can spend it in parts, and whatever is left waits for next time. You can send it to yourself to hand over in person, or straight to her with a personal message.
Common Questions About Choosing Jewelry as a Gift
What is the safest jewelry to give as a gift?
A ring or a necklace, because neither needs her size. My natural stone rings adjust, and my necklaces hang on an 18-inch cord. Earrings work too, once you know her ears are pierced.
Can a gift be exchanged or returned?
Yes. You have 30 days after delivery to ask for a return, as long as the piece is unworn and in its original packaging. So keep the box, and give the receipt separately. No gift I have sold has ever come back. Once, someone asked to swap for a different piece, and I was glad to do it.
Can you ship straight to the person?
Yes, as long as you know her address. It arrives gift wrapped, with your note inside.
What is the best jewelry for Christmas gifts?
A piece she will keep wearing long after the holidays. Choose by what she already wears, or by her birthstone, and order early. If time runs out, the gift card still arrives the same day.
Are your earrings fine for sensitive ears?
Usually, yes. Nickel is the metal behind most reactions, and my silver contains none. If her skin has reacted badly to jewelry before, it is worth asking her dermatologist first.
