Black Moissanite Earrings - Lab Grown Crystal Crust

These black moissanite earrings set two dark, crystalline teardrops in rims of silver beads.

Moissanite barely exists in nature
Moissanite is silicon carbide. It was first found in 1893 in a meteorite crater in Arizona, and in its natural form it is so rare that the moissanite used in jewelry is grown in a laboratory. So in this one piece our usual rule does not apply: this stone was not mined, it was grown.

Black until the light finds it
The stone is so dark a blue that at first glance it reads black. That is how it looks across a room, on the shoulder, in a mirror. When light hits it directly the blue comes up out of the dark, and with it the green and pink reflections.

Where those reflections come from
Moissanite splits light into color more strongly than diamond does. The face here is not polished flat: it is a crust of angular crystals, so that split happens at many small angles at once instead of across one even surface.

A rim of beads
Silver beads run the whole way round each stone and hold it from the edge. Above it sits a small textured cap carrying the same beads. We build the silver around the stone in our Tbilisi studio.

Small, and close to the lobe
The earring sits near the lobe with nothing hanging below it, so it does not swing and it does not catch in hair or a scarf.

Leverback, not a hook
The hinged lever closes behind the ear, so the earring cannot slide off during the day.
