Malachite Drop Earrings - Long Green Wedges in Silver

These malachite earrings hang two long green wedges from granulated silver bars.

Fibers that fan across the face
Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral, which is where the green comes from. On these faces the fibers do not run in straight lines: they fan out from a point near one edge and spread across the stone, so the light opens across the face instead of crossing it.

The line of the wedge
Each stone is a wedge, narrow where it meets the bar and widest at the bottom. The line carries downward, so the pair reads as length before it reads as green.

Beads along every edge
Darkened silver beads run along every edge of both stones and hold them from the outside. The silver is oxidized so the green stays the only bright thing on the ear.

A branching lattice behind
Behind each stone the silver is a branching lattice with gaps through it, and the green shows through from behind. We shape both stones and build the silver around them in our Tbilisi studio.

Leverback, not a hook
The hinged lever closes behind the ear, so the drop cannot slide off during the day.
