Malachite Pendant - Narrow Bar of Raw Green Stone

This malachite pendant sets a narrow bar of raw green stone in darkened silver claws, on a soft black cord.

A face covered in small bumps
Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral, which is where the green comes from. This face is not flat and not fibrous. It is covered in small rounded bumps sitting close together, so the light breaks over them in dozens of short highlights instead of running across one surface.

Cut narrow, standing tall
We cut the stone to a narrow upright bar and left that bumped face untouched. Standing tall and thin, it reads as one clean line under the collarbone, and the bumps catch the light every time you move.

Beads down both edges
Silver beads run down both long edges and fold over the stone at the corners. The silver is oxidized dark, so the green stays the brightest thing on the piece.

An openwork back
Behind the stone the silver is not a closed plate but an openwork lattice with gaps right through it. We cut the stone and build the silver around it in our Tbilisi studio.

A cord, not a chain
The soft black cord lies flat against the skin and catches no light of its own, so the green is the only color you see.
