Malachite Teardrop Earrings - Green Stones in Claws

These malachite earrings hang two green teardrops in silver claws, from bars set with fine granules.

Fibers running through the green
Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral, which is where the green comes from. These faces are not polished flat: fine fibers run through the green in long lines, so the light travels along them and the dark and light greens read as one flowing pattern.

Cut as a pear
Each stone is cut as a pear, wide at the bottom and narrow at the top. The shape carries the eye downward, so the drop reads longer on the ear than its measurement suggests.

Claws, each bent to its own edge
Silver claws with beaded tips close over the edge of each stone and hold it from the outside. They are not evenly spaced, because each one is bent to the edge it grips. We shape both stones and build the silver around them in our Tbilisi studio.

An open gallery behind
Behind each stone the silver is an open gallery, not a closed plate. The green shows through the gaps from behind, and the same hand that worked the front worked the side nobody sees.

Leverback, not a hook
The hinged lever closes behind the ear, so the drop cannot slide off during the day.

Every stone is chosen and set one at a time. The pair that reaches you will be close to the photograph and never a copy of it.
