Malachite Earrings - Green Ovals on a Silver Vine

These malachite earrings hang two green ovals in rims of silver beads, from a bar worked as a leafy vine.

Malachite is opaque, and banded
Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral, which is where the green comes from, and it is opaque rather than see-through. On these ovals the darker and lighter greens run in bands across the face, so each stone reads as a small pattern rather than one flat color.

Cut to an even oval
The stone is shaped to a regular oval and ringed by a crown that repeats the same bead the whole way round. That order is deliberate: it gives the green a fixed frame, so what moves is the banding inside it and not the outline. We shape both stones and build the silver around them in our Tbilisi studio.

A rim of silver beads
Small silver beads stand up all around each oval and hold the stone from the edge. The silver is oxidized dark, so the green reads brighter against it.

A vine bar, and a closed back
Above each drop sits a narrow bar worked as a vine, with small leaves along its length. The back of each setting is a closed plate, brushed with a fine texture on the side that rests against the skin.

Leverback, not a hook
The hinged lever closes behind the ear, so nothing works loose during the day.
